The U. S. Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra for the treatment of ED in April 2023, marking the first oral oral therapy for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The FDA's first clinical trial of the drug indicated that the drug can be effective, and a subsequent study found a significant improvement in ED symptoms. The drug, which is sold as Cialis and is now available generically, is the second-most prescribed drug in the United States and is the world's second-most prescribed erectile dysfunction (ED) drug, with the first being Cialis in 1999.
The FDA issued a warning in March 2024 about the drug's risk of cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke, when it was first approved for this purpose. These events occurred at a rate of nearly 3.5 per cent of the population, but were the second-highest among men age 40 and older. The agency said that the drug is no longer the best medicine for its use.
In a statement, the FDA said it had not received any reports of cardiovascular events, and that Viagra is a safe drug.
“The FDA's continued approval and continued commitment to patient safety is a major investment in the development of effective treatments for ED,” said Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a professor of urology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Gottlieb noted that patients with ED may experience symptoms such as a burning sensation, tingling sensation, weakness, or numbness in the arms and legs, and these may be improved with the drug. However, because of the risk of serious adverse events, the FDA did not recommend the use of Viagra, or any other ED medications.
The FDA had not approved Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in June 2024 and the drug is now the world's second most prescribed drug in the United States, with the first being Cialis in 1999.
Viagra is the world’s most widely prescribed ED drug, with the first being Cialis in 1998.
